[86] Bhikkhus, these four kinds of persons are found existing in the world. Which four? The low who goes to the low (oṇatoṇata), the low who goes to the high (oṇatuṇṇata), the high who goes to the low (uṇṇatoṇata), and the high who goes to the high (uṇṇatuṇṇata).
And how, bhikkhus, is a person low who goes to the low? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is reborn in a low family — in a family of outcastes (caṇḍāla) or … He engages in misconduct (duccarita) by body, engages in misconduct by speech, engages in misconduct by mind. Having engaged in misconduct by body, having engaged in misconduct by speech, having engaged in misconduct by mind, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in a state of loss (apāya), a bad destination (duggati), a place of ruin (vinipāta), hell (niraya). It is thus, bhikkhus, that a person is low who goes to the low.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person low who goes to the high? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is reborn in a low family — in a family of outcastes or … He engages in good conduct (sucarita) by body, engages in good conduct by speech, engages in good conduct by mind. Having engaged in good conduct by body, having engaged in good conduct by speech, having engaged in good conduct by mind, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in a good destination (sugati), a heavenly world (sagga). It is thus, bhikkhus, that a person is low who goes to the high.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person high who goes to the low? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is reborn in a high family — in a family of affluent khattiyas or … Having engaged in misconduct by body, having engaged in misconduct by speech, having engaged in misconduct by mind, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell.
