[85] Bhikkhus, these four kinds of persons are found existing in the world. What four? One in darkness who is heading for darkness; one in darkness who is heading for light; one in light who is heading for darkness; one in light who is heading for light. And how, bhikkhus, is a person in darkness heading for darkness? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is reborn in a low family — a family of caṇḍālas, or a family of bamboo-workers, or a family of hunters, or a family of cart-makers, or a family of refuse-cleaners — poor, with little food and drink, subsisting with difficulty, where food and covering are obtained with hardship. And he is ill-favoured, unsightly, dwarfish, and sickly — blind, or crook-limbed, or lame, or paralyzed — one who does not gain food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents and unguents, bedding, lodging, and lamps. He engages in misconduct (duccarita) by body, engages in misconduct by speech, engages in misconduct by mind. Having engaged in misconduct by body, having engaged in misconduct by speech, having engaged in misconduct by mind, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the plane of misery (apāya), a bad destination, the lower world, hell (niraya). It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is in darkness and heading for darkness. And how, bhikkhus, is a person in darkness heading for light? He engages in good conduct (sucarita) by body, engages in good conduct by speech, engages in good conduct by mind. Having engaged in good conduct by body, having engaged in good conduct by speech, having engaged in good conduct by mind, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is in darkness and heading for light. And how, bhikkhus, is a person in light heading for darkness? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is reborn in a high family — a family of affluent khattiyas, or a family of affluent brahmins, or a family of affluent householders — rich, with great wealth, with great possessions, with abundant gold and silver, with abundant treasures and belongings, with abundant wealth and grain. And he is handsome, comely, graceful, endowed with supreme beauty of complexion — one who gains food, drink, clothing, vehicles, garlands, scents and unguents, bedding, lodging, and lamps. He engages in misconduct by body, engages in misconduct by speech, engages in misconduct by mind. Having engaged in misconduct by body, having engaged in misconduct by speech, having engaged in misconduct by mind, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the plane of misery, a bad destination, the lower world, hell. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is in light and heading for darkness. And how, bhikkhus, is a person in light heading for light? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is reborn in a high family — a family of affluent khattiyas, or a family of affluent brahmins, or a family of affluent householders — rich, with great wealth, with great possessions, with abundant gold and silver, with abundant treasures and belongings, with abundant wealth and grain. He engages in good conduct by body, engages in good conduct by speech, engages in good conduct by mind. Having engaged in good conduct by body, having engaged in good conduct by speech, having engaged in good conduct by mind, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is in light and heading for light. These, bhikkhus, are the four kinds of persons found existing in the world.
