[89] Bhikkhus, these four persons are found existing in the world. Which four? The unshakable ascetic (samaṇamacala), the white-lotus ascetic (samaṇapuṇḍarīka), the pink-lotus ascetic (samaṇapaduma), and the delicate ascetic among ascetics (samaṇasukhumāla).
And how, bhikkhus, is a person an unshakable ascetic? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is one of right view (sammādiṭṭhi), one of right thought (sammāsaṅkappa), one of right speech (sammāvācā), one of right action (sammākammanta), one of right livelihood (sammā-ājīva), one of right effort (sammāvāyāma), one of right mindfulness (sammāsati), one of right concentration (sammāsamādhi). It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is an unshakable ascetic.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person a white-lotus ascetic? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is one of right view, one of right thought, one of right speech, one of right action, one of right livelihood, one of right effort, one of right mindfulness, one of right concentration, one of right knowledge (sammāñāṇa), one of right deliverance (sammāvimutti); but he does not dwell having touched the eight liberations (vimokkha) with the body. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is a white-lotus ascetic.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person a pink-lotus ascetic? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is one of right view … one of right knowledge, one of right deliverance; and he dwells having touched the eight liberations with the body. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is a pink-lotus ascetic.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person a delicate ascetic among ascetics? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu uses robes (cīvara) for the most part only when asked, seldom when unasked … For if, bhikkhus, one speaking rightly could say of anyone, "a delicate ascetic among ascetics," it is precisely of me, bhikkhus, that one speaking rightly could say, "a delicate ascetic among ascetics." For I, bhikkhus, use robes for the most part only when asked, seldom when unasked … These, bhikkhus, are the four persons found existing in the world.
