[90] Bhikkhus, these four persons are found existing in the world. What four? The unshakable ascetic (samaṇamacala), the white-lotus ascetic (samaṇapuṇḍarīka), the red-lotus ascetic (samaṇapaduma), and the delicate ascetic among ascetics (samaṇasukhumāla).
And how, bhikkhus, is a person an unshakable ascetic? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is a trainee (sekha) who has not attained his mind's ideal, who dwells aspiring to the unsurpassed security from bondage (yogakkhema). It is thus, bhikkhus, that a person is an unshakable ascetic.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person a white-lotus ascetic? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating rise and fall in the five aggregates subject to clinging: "Such is form, such is the origin of form, such is the passing away of form; such is feeling (vedanā) …; such is perception …; such are volitional formations …; such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the passing away of consciousness" — yet he does not dwell having touched the eight liberations (vimokkha) with the body. It is thus, bhikkhus, that a person is a white-lotus ascetic.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person a red-lotus ascetic? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating rise and fall in the five aggregates subject to clinging: "Such is form, such is the origin of form, such is the passing away of form; such is feeling …; such is perception …; such are volitional formations …; such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the passing away of consciousness" — and he dwells having touched the eight liberations with the body. It is thus, bhikkhus, that a person is a red-lotus ascetic.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person a delicate ascetic among ascetics? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu uses much robe-cloth only when asked, little when unasked … Bhikkhus, if of anyone one speaking rightly would say, "a delicate ascetic among ascetics," it is of me, bhikkhus, that one speaking rightly would say, "a delicate ascetic among ascetics." For I, bhikkhus, use much robe-cloth only when asked, little when unasked … These, bhikkhus, are the four persons found existing in the world.
