[91] Bhikkhus, these four persons (puggala) are found existing in the world. What four? The asura with a retinue of asuras; the asura with a retinue of devas; the deva with a retinue of asuras; the deva with a retinue of devas.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person an asura with a retinue of asuras? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is immoral, of evil character, and his assembly (parisā) too is immoral, of evil character. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is an asura with a retinue of asuras.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person an asura with a retinue of devas? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is immoral, of evil character, but his assembly is virtuous, of good character. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is an asura with a retinue of devas.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person a deva with a retinue of asuras? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is virtuous, of good character, but his assembly is immoral, of evil character. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is a deva with a retinue of asuras.
And how, bhikkhus, is a person a deva with a retinue of devas? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is virtuous, of good character, and his assembly too is virtuous, of good character. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is a deva with a retinue of devas.
These, bhikkhus, are the four persons found existing in the world.
