[112] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities should not be taken along as an attendant ascetic (pacchāsamaṇa). What five? He walks too far behind or too close; he does not take the bowl with its contents; he does not restrain one whose speech is bordering on an offense (āpatti); he keeps interrupting one who is speaking; and he is unwise, dull, obtuse. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities should not be taken along as an attendant ascetic.
Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities may be taken along as an attendant ascetic. What five? He walks neither too far behind nor too close; he takes the bowl with its contents; he restrains one whose speech is bordering on an offense; he does not keep interrupting one who is speaking; and he is wise, not dull, not obtuse. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities may be taken along as an attendant ascetic.
