[114] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Magadhans at Andhakavinda. Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. As the Venerable Ānanda was sitting to one side, the Blessed One said this to him:
"Ānanda, those bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline — those bhikkhus, Ānanda, should be exhorted by you, settled, and established in five things. In which five?
"'Come, friends, be virtuous; dwell restrained by the restraint of the Pātimokkha, possessed of good conduct and resort, seeing danger in the slightest faults; undertaking them, train in the training rules.' Thus they should be exhorted, settled, and established in restraint by the Pātimokkha (pātimokkhasaṃvara).
"'Come, friends, dwell with the doors guarded in respect of the sense faculties, with mindfulness (sati) as protector, with prudent mindfulness, with a mind (citta) well guarded, endowed with a mind under the protection of mindfulness.' Thus they should be exhorted, settled, and established in restraint of the sense faculties (indriyasaṃvara).
"'Come, friends, be of little speech; set a limit upon speech.' Thus they should be exhorted, settled, and established in limitation of speech (bhassapariyanta).
"'Come, friends, be forest dwellers; resort to remote lodgings in forests and woodland thickets.' Thus they should be exhorted, settled, and established in bodily seclusion (kāyavūpakāsa).
"'Come, friends, be of right view, endowed with right vision.' Thus they should be exhorted, settled, and established in right vision (sammādassana).
"Ānanda, those bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline — those bhikkhus, Ānanda, should be exhorted by you, settled, and established in these five things."
