[141] Bhikkhus, these five persons are found existing in the world. What five? One who, having given, despises; one who despises through living together; one who is credulous (ādeyyamukha); one who is fickle; and one who is dull and confused.
And how, bhikkhus, does a person, having given, despise? Here, bhikkhus, a person gives to another person robes, almsfood, lodging, and medicinal requisites for the sick. It occurs to him thus: 'I give; this one receives.' Having given, he despises that person. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person, having given, despises. And how, bhikkhus, does a person despise through living together? Here, bhikkhus, a person lives together with another person for two or three years; through living together he despises that person. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person despises through living together. And how, bhikkhus, is a person credulous? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person, when the praise or dispraise of another is being spoken, is quickly convinced of it. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is credulous. And how, bhikkhus, is a person fickle? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person has fleeting faith, fleeting devotion, fleeting affection, fleeting confidence. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is fickle. And how, bhikkhus, is a person dull and confused? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person does not know wholesome and unwholesome dhammas; he does not know blameworthy and blameless dhammas; he does not know inferior and superior dhammas; he does not know dark and bright dhammas with their counterparts. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a person is dull and confused. These, bhikkhus, are the five persons found existing in the world.
