[142] Bhikkhus, these five persons are found existing in the world. Which five? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person commits a fault and is remorseful, and he does not understand as it really is that deliverance of mind (cetovimutti), that deliverance through wisdom (paññāvimutti), wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain person commits a fault and is not remorseful, and he does not understand as it really is that deliverance of mind, that deliverance through wisdom, wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain person does not commit a fault yet is remorseful, and he does not understand as it really is that deliverance of mind, that deliverance through wisdom, wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain person does not commit a fault and is not remorseful, and he does not understand as it really is that deliverance of mind, that deliverance through wisdom, wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder. Here again, bhikkhus, a certain person does not commit a fault and is not remorseful, and he understands as it really is that deliverance of mind, that deliverance through wisdom, wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder. Therein, bhikkhus, the person who commits a fault and is remorseful, and who does not understand as it really is that deliverance of mind, that deliverance through wisdom, wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder — he should be spoken to thus: "Taints (āsava) born of committing faults are found in the venerable one, and taints born of remorse increase. It would be good indeed if the venerable one, having abandoned the taints born of committing faults and having dispelled the taints born of remorse, would develop the mind (citta) and wisdom; in this way the venerable one will become exactly equal to that fifth person." Therein, bhikkhus, the person who commits a fault but is not remorseful, and who does not understand as it really is that deliverance of mind, that deliverance through wisdom, wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder — he should be spoken to thus: "Taints born of committing faults are found in the venerable one, but taints born of remorse do not increase. It would be good indeed if the venerable one, having abandoned the taints born of committing faults, would develop the mind and wisdom; in this way the venerable one will become exactly equal to that fifth person." Therein, bhikkhus, the person who does not commit a fault yet is remorseful, and who does not understand as it really is that deliverance of mind, that deliverance through wisdom, wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder — he should be spoken to thus: "Taints born of committing faults are not found in the venerable one, but taints born of remorse increase. It would be good indeed if the venerable one, having dispelled the taints born of remorse, would develop the mind and wisdom; in this way the venerable one will become exactly equal to that fifth person." Therein, bhikkhus, the person who does not commit a fault and is not remorseful, and who does not understand as it really is that deliverance of mind, that deliverance through wisdom, wherein those evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in him cease without remainder — he should be spoken to thus: "Taints born of committing faults are not found in the venerable one, and taints born of remorse do not increase. It would be good indeed if the venerable one would develop the mind and wisdom; in this way the venerable one will become exactly equal to that fifth person." Thus, bhikkhus, these four persons, being exhorted in this way and instructed in this way with reference to that fifth person, gradually attain the destruction of the taints.
