[155] Bhikkhus, these five things lead to the forgetting and disappearance of the true Dhamma (saddhamma). What five? Here, bhikkhus, the bhikkhus do not learn the Dhamma — the discourses (sutta), the mixed prose and verse (geyya), the prose-expositions (veyyākaraṇa), the verses (gāthā), the inspired utterances (udāna), the thus-said discourses (itivuttaka), the birth-stories (jātaka), the marvellous accounts (abbhūtadhamma), and the question-and-answer texts (vedalla). This, bhikkhus, is the first thing that leads to the forgetting and disappearance of the true Dhamma. Furthermore, bhikkhus, the bhikkhus do not teach the Dhamma to others in detail as they have heard it and learned it. This, bhikkhus, is the second thing that leads to the forgetting and disappearance of the true Dhamma. Furthermore, bhikkhus, the bhikkhus do not make another recite the Dhamma in detail as they have heard it and learned it. This, bhikkhus, is the third thing that leads to the forgetting and disappearance of the true Dhamma. Furthermore, bhikkhus, the bhikkhus do not recite the Dhamma in detail as they have heard it and learned it. This, bhikkhus, is the fourth thing that leads to the forgetting and disappearance of the true Dhamma. Furthermore, bhikkhus, the bhikkhus do not think over in their heart, examine, and mentally inspect the Dhamma as they have heard it and learned it. This, bhikkhus, is the fifth thing that leads to the forgetting and disappearance of the true Dhamma. These, indeed, bhikkhus, are the five things that lead to the forgetting and disappearance of the true Dhamma.
Bhikkhus, these five things lead to the continuance, non-forgetting, and non-disappearance of the true Dhamma. What five? This, bhikkhus, is the fourth thing that leads to the continuance, non-forgetting, and non-disappearance of the true Dhamma. Furthermore, bhikkhus, the bhikkhus think over in their heart, examine, and mentally inspect the Dhamma as they have heard it and learned it. This, bhikkhus, is the fifth thing that leads to the continuance, non-forgetting, and non-disappearance of the true Dhamma. These, indeed, bhikkhus, are the five things that lead to the continuance, non-forgetting, and non-disappearance of the true Dhamma.
