[154] Bhikkhus, these five things (dhamma) lead to the decline and disappearance of the true Dhamma (saddhamma). What five? Here, bhikkhus, bhikkhus do not listen to the Dhamma respectfully; they do not learn the Dhamma respectfully; they do not retain the Dhamma respectfully; they do not examine the meaning of the teachings they have retained respectfully; and having understood the meaning and understood the Dhamma, they do not practice in accordance with the Dhamma respectfully. These five things, bhikkhus, lead to the decline and disappearance of the true Dhamma.
Bhikkhus, these five things lead to the continuance, non-decline, and non-disappearance of the true Dhamma. What five? Here, bhikkhus, bhikkhus listen to the Dhamma respectfully; they learn the Dhamma respectfully; they retain the Dhamma respectfully; they examine the meaning of the teachings they have retained respectfully; and having understood the meaning and understood the Dhamma, they practice in accordance with the Dhamma respectfully. These five things, bhikkhus, lead to the continuance, non-decline, and non-disappearance of the true Dhamma.
