[159] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Kosambī, in Ghosita's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Udāyi was seated teaching the Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople. The Venerable Ānanda saw the Venerable Udāyi seated teaching the Dhamma, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople; and having seen him, he approached the Blessed One, and having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the Venerable Udāyi, surrounded by a large assembly of laypeople, is seated teaching the Dhamma."
"It is not easy, Ānanda, to teach the Dhamma to others. When teaching the Dhamma to others, Ānanda, one should establish five things within oneself and then teach the Dhamma to others. What five? The Dhamma should be taught to others [thinking]: 'I shall give a talk that proceeds in gradual sequence (anupubbikathā).' The Dhamma should be taught to others [thinking]: 'I shall give a talk showing reasons (pariyāyadassāvī).' The Dhamma should be taught to others [thinking]: 'I shall give a talk out of sympathy (anudayataṃ paṭicca).' The Dhamma should be taught to others [thinking]: 'I shall give a talk not for the sake of material gain (na āmisantaro).' The Dhamma should be taught to others [thinking]: 'I shall give a talk without hurting myself or others (attānañca parañca anupahacca).' It is not easy, Ānanda, to teach the Dhamma to others. When teaching the Dhamma to others, Ānanda, one should establish these five things within oneself and then teach the Dhamma to others."
