[160] Bhikkhus, there are these five things which, once arisen, are hard to dispel. What five? Lust (rāga), once arisen, is hard to dispel; hatred (dosa), once arisen, is hard to dispel; delusion (moha), once arisen, is hard to dispel; the inspiration to speak (paṭibhāṇa), once arisen, is hard to dispel; the mind set on travelling (gamikacitta), once arisen, is hard to dispel. These, bhikkhus, are the five things which, once arisen, are hard to dispel. The First Chapter: on the True Dhamma (Saddhammavagga). Its summary (uddāna): Three on the fixed course of the true Dhamma,¹ three on the confusion of the true Dhamma, wrong talk and timidity,² Udāyī, and (the things) hard to dispel. ¹ The M.
