[161] Bhikkhus, there are these five means of removing resentment (āghātapaṭivinaya), by which resentment that has arisen in a bhikkhu should be entirely removed. What five?
Bhikkhus, toward whatever person resentment might arise, loving-kindness (mettā) should be developed toward that person; in this way resentment toward that person should be removed.
Bhikkhus, toward whatever person resentment might arise, compassion (karuṇā) should be developed toward that person; in this way resentment toward that person should be removed.
Bhikkhus, toward whatever person resentment might arise, equanimity (upekkhā) should be developed toward that person; in this way resentment toward that person should be removed.
Bhikkhus, toward whatever person resentment might arise, unmindfulness and inattention (asati-amanasikāra) should be practiced toward that person; in this way resentment toward that person should be removed.
Bhikkhus, toward whatever person resentment might arise, ownership of kamma (kammassakatā) should be firmly established regarding that person: "This venerable one is the owner of his kamma, the heir of his kamma, born of his kamma, related to his kamma, with kamma as his refuge; whatever kamma he does, whether good or bad, of that he will be the heir." In this way resentment toward that person should be removed.
These, bhikkhus, are the five means of removing resentment, by which resentment that has arisen in a bhikkhu should be entirely removed.
