[17] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities (dhammā) is practicing for his own welfare, not for the welfare of others. What five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is himself accomplished in virtue (sīla), but does not encourage another in the accomplishment of virtue; he is himself accomplished in concentration (samādhi), but does not encourage another in the accomplishment of concentration; he is himself accomplished in wisdom (paññā), but does not encourage another in the accomplishment of wisdom; he is himself accomplished in liberation (vimutti), but does not encourage another in the accomplishment of liberation; he is himself accomplished in the knowledge and vision of liberation (vimuttiñāṇadassana), but does not encourage another in the accomplishment of the knowledge and vision of liberation. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities is practicing for his own welfare, not for the welfare of others.
