[16] Bhikkhus, there are these five powers (bala). What five? The power of faith (saddhābala), the power of energy (vīriyabala), the power of mindfulness (satibala), the power of concentration (samādhi) (samādhibala), and the power of wisdom (paññābala). These, bhikkhus, are the five powers. Of these five powers, bhikkhus, this is the chief, this is what holds them together, this is what binds them, namely, the power of wisdom. Just as, bhikkhus, in a peaked house this is the chief, this is what holds it together, this is what binds it, namely, the peak; even so, bhikkhus, of these five powers this is the chief, this is what holds them together, this is what binds them, namely, the power of wisdom.
