[177] Bhikkhus, these five trades (vaṇijjā) should not be plied by a lay follower (upāsaka). Which five? Trade in weapons (satthavaṇijjā), trade in living beings (sattavaṇijjā), trade in flesh (maṃsavaṇijjā), trade in intoxicants (majjavaṇijjā), and trade in poison (visavaṇijjā).
