[176] Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika, surrounded by about five hundred lay followers, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. To the householder Anāthapiṇḍika, seated to one side, the Blessed One said this: "Householder, you have attended upon the Saṅgha of bhikkhus with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. But, householder, you should not rest content with just this much: 'We have attended upon the Saṅgha of bhikkhus with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.' Therefore, householder, you should train thus: 'How can we from time to time enter and dwell in the rapture (pīti) of seclusion?' Thus, householder, should you train." When this was said, the Venerable Sārīputta said to the Blessed One: "It is wonderful, venerable sir, it is marvellous, venerable sir, how well this has been spoken by the Blessed One: 'Householder, you have attended upon the Saṅgha of bhikkhus with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. But, householder, you should not rest content with just this much: "We have attended upon the Saṅgha of bhikkhus with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick." Therefore, householder, you should train thus: "How can we from time to time enter and dwell in the rapture of seclusion?" Thus, householder, should you train.' Venerable sir, at whatever time a noble disciple enters and dwells in the rapture of seclusion, at that time five things do not exist for him: at that time, whatever suffering (dukkha) and grief connected with sensuality there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time; whatever pleasure and joy connected with sensuality there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time; whatever suffering and grief connected with the unwholesome there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time; whatever pleasure and joy connected with the unwholesome there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time; whatever suffering and grief connected with the wholesome there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time. Venerable sir, at whatever time a noble disciple enters and dwells in the rapture of seclusion, at that time these five things do not exist for him." "Good, good, Sārīputta! At whatever time, Sārīputta, a noble disciple enters and dwells in the rapture of seclusion, at that time five things do not exist for him: at that time, whatever suffering and grief connected with sensuality there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time; whatever pleasure and joy connected with sensuality there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time; whatever suffering and grief connected with the unwholesome there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time; whatever pleasure and joy connected with the unwholesome there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time; whatever suffering and grief connected with the wholesome there might be for him, that does not exist for him at that time. At whatever time, Sārīputta, a noble disciple enters and dwells in the rapture of seclusion, at that time these five things do not exist for him."
