[175] Bhikkhus, a lay follower (upāsaka) possessed of five qualities is an outcaste of a lay follower, a stain of a lay follower, and the lowest of lay followers. Of which five? He is without faith (saddhā); he is immoral; he is superstitious about auspicious omens (kotuhalamaṅgalika), believing in omens (maṅgala) and not in kamma; he seeks outside of here for one worthy of offerings (dakkhiṇeyya); and there he does his services first. Possessed of these five qualities, bhikkhus, a lay follower is an outcaste of a lay follower, a stain of a lay follower, and the lowest of lay followers.
Bhikkhus, a lay follower possessed of five qualities is a jewel of a lay follower, a lotus of a lay follower, and a white lotus of a lay follower. Of which five? He has faith; he is virtuous; he is not superstitious about auspicious omens, believing in kamma and not in omens; he does not seek outside of here for one worthy of offerings; and here he does his services first. Possessed of these five qualities, bhikkhus, a lay follower is a jewel of a lay follower, a lotus of a lay follower, and a white lotus of a lay follower.
