[190] Bhikkhus, there are these five kinds of those who eat only from the alms bowl (pattapiṇḍika). What five? One is an eater only from the alms bowl out of dullness and stupidity; one of evil desires, overcome by desire, is an eater only from the alms bowl; one is an eater only from the alms bowl out of madness and derangement of mind; one is an eater only from the alms bowl [thinking]: "It is praised by the Buddhas and the Buddhas' disciples"; one is an eater only from the alms bowl relying just on fewness of wishes, relying just on contentment, relying just on effacement, relying just on seclusion, relying just on the need for this very [practice]. These, bhikkhus, are the five kinds of those who eat only from the alms bowl.
Bhikkhus, of these five kinds of those who eat only from the alms bowl, the one who is an eater only from the alms bowl relying just on fewness of wishes, relying just on contentment, relying just on effacement, relying just on seclusion, relying just on the need for this very [practice] — this one is the foremost, the best, the preeminent, the highest, and the finest of these five kinds of those who eat only from the alms bowl. Just as, bhikkhus, from a cow comes milk, from milk curd, from curd butter, from butter ghee, and from ghee the cream of ghee, and the cream of ghee is declared the foremost of these — even so, bhikkhus, of these five kinds of those who eat only from the alms bowl, the one who is an eater only from the alms bowl relying just on fewness of wishes, relying just on contentment, relying just on effacement, relying just on seclusion, relying just on the need for this very [practice] — this one is the foremost, the best, the preeminent, the highest, and the finest of these five kinds of those who eat only from the alms bowl.

The forest, the robe, the tree, the charnel ground, the open air,
The sitter, whatever bed is offered, the one [session],
The refuser of later food, and with the eater from the bowl.
