[191] Bhikkhus, these five ancient brahmin practices (porāṇā brāhmaṇadhammā) are now seen among dogs, not among brahmins. What five? Formerly, bhikkhus, brahmins went only with a brahmin woman, not with a non-brahmin woman. Now, bhikkhus, brahmins go with brahmin women and go with non-brahmin women too. Now, bhikkhus, dogs go only with a female dog, not with a female that is not a dog. This, bhikkhus, is the first ancient brahmin practice that is now seen among dogs, not among brahmins.
Formerly, bhikkhus, brahmins went with a brahmin woman only when she was in season, not when she was out of season. Now, bhikkhus, brahmins go with a brahmin woman when she is in season and also when she is out of season. Now, bhikkhus, dogs go with a female dog only when she is in season, not when she is out of season. This, bhikkhus, is the second ancient brahmin practice that is now seen among dogs, not among brahmins.
Formerly, bhikkhus, brahmins neither bought nor sold a brahmin woman; they carried on their life together only through mutual affection, for the sake of the bond. Now, bhikkhus, brahmins both buy and sell brahmin women, though they carry on their life together through mutual affection, for the sake of the bond. Now, bhikkhus, dogs neither buy nor sell a female dog; they carry on their life together only through mutual affection, for the sake of the bond. This, bhikkhus, is the third ancient brahmin practice that is now seen among dogs, not among brahmins.
Formerly, bhikkhus, brahmins made no store of wealth, grain, silver, or gold. Now, bhikkhus, brahmins make a store of wealth, grain, silver, and gold. Now, bhikkhus, dogs make no store of wealth, grain, silver, or gold. This, bhikkhus, is the fourth ancient brahmin practice that is now seen among dogs, not among brahmins.
Formerly, bhikkhus, brahmins sought alms in the evening for the evening meal and in the morning for the morning meal. Now, bhikkhus, brahmins, having eaten as much as they wish until their bellies are full, depart taking the remainder with them. Now, bhikkhus, dogs seek food in the evening for the evening meal and in the morning for the morning meal. This, bhikkhus, is the fifth ancient brahmin practice that is now seen among dogs, not among brahmins.
