[199] Bhikkhus, whatever family virtuous renunciants (pabbajita) approach, the people there generate much merit (puñña) on five grounds. What five? Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion, when virtuous renunciants are approaching a family, the minds (citta) of the people gain confidence upon seeing them — on that occasion, bhikkhus, that family is practicing a way of practice (paṭipadā) that leads to heaven. Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion, when virtuous renunciants are approaching a family, the people rise up to receive them, pay homage to them, and offer them a seat — on that occasion, bhikkhus, that family is practicing a way of practice that leads to birth in a high family. Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion, when virtuous renunciants are approaching a family, the people dispel the stain of stinginess — on that occasion, bhikkhus, that family is practicing a way of practice that leads to great influence. Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion, when virtuous renunciants are approaching a family, the people share according to their ability and according to their strength — on that occasion, bhikkhus, that family is practicing a way of practice that leads to great wealth. Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion, when virtuous renunciants are approaching a family, the people question them, inquire of them, and listen to the Dhamma — on that occasion, bhikkhus, that family is practicing a way of practice that leads to great wisdom. Bhikkhus, on whatever occasion virtuous renunciants approach a family, the people there generate much merit on these five grounds.
