[209] Bhikkhus, there are these five dangers (ādīnava) for one who recites the Dhamma with a drawn-out, song-like intonation. What five? He himself becomes attached to that sound; others become attached to that sound; householders complain, saying: "Just as we sing, so too these ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, sing"; for one intent upon refinement of the vocal sound there comes a break in concentration (samādhi); and the people who come after fall into imitation of his example. These, bhikkhus, are the five dangers for one who recites the Dhamma with a drawn-out, song-like intonation.
