[236] Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu (āvāsika) possessed of five qualities is deposited in hell (niraya) as if carried and placed there. Which five? Without having investigated, without having scrutinized, he speaks praise of one deserving blame; without having investigated, without having scrutinized, he speaks blame of one deserving praise; without having investigated, without having scrutinized, he shows confidence in a matter that does not merit confidence; without having investigated, without having scrutinized, he shows lack of confidence in a matter that merits confidence; and he squanders a gift given in faith (saddhādeyya). Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities is deposited in hell as if carried and placed there.

Having investigated, having scrutinized, he speaks blame of one deserving blame; having investigated, having scrutinized, he speaks praise of one deserving praise; having investigated, having scrutinized, he shows lack of confidence in a matter that does not merit confidence; having investigated, having scrutinized, he shows confidence in a matter that merits confidence; and he does not squander a gift given in faith.
