[235] Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu possessing five qualities shows compassion to householders. What five? He encourages them to undertake higher virtue (adhisīla); he establishes them in the vision of the Dhamma; approaching those who are sick, he arouses mindfulness (sati) in them, saying: "Venerable ones, establish mindfulness directed toward the Worthy One (arahaggataṃ)." When a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus has arrived, with bhikkhus come from various regions, he approaches the householders and announces: "Friends, a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus has arrived, with bhikkhus come from various regions; make merit — it is an occasion for making merit." And whatever food they give him, whether coarse or fine, he consumes it himself; he does not let a gift given in faith (saddhādeyya) go to waste. Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu shows compassion to householders.
