[234] "Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu (āvāsika bhikkhu) possessing five qualities is of great service to the monastery (āvāsa). What five? He is virtuous … he trains in the training rules he has undertaken; he is learned … well penetrated by view; he repairs what is broken and dilapidated; when a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus has arrived — bhikkhus from various regions — he approaches householders and informs them: 'Friends, a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus has arrived, bhikkhus from various regions. Make merit; it is an occasion for making merit.' And he is one who gains at will, without trouble and without difficulty, the four jhānas that pertain to the higher mind and are pleasant dwellings in this very life. Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu is of great service to the monastery."
