[233] Bhikkhus, possessing five qualities, a resident bhikkhu (āvāsika) beautifies the dwelling place (āvāsa). What five? He is virtuous … he trains in the training rules; he is of great learning … well penetrated by view; he is of lovely speech, of lovely enunciation, endowed with speech that is urbane, distinct, free of stammering, capable of conveying the meaning; he is able to instruct, encourage, inspire, and gladden one who approaches him with talk on the Dhamma; he is one who gains at will, gains without trouble, gains without difficulty the four jhānas that pertain to the higher mind and are pleasant dwellings in this very life. Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu beautifies the dwelling place.
