[244] Bhikkhus, there are these five dangers (ādīnava) in misconduct by mind (mano-duccarita). What five? One blames oneself; the wise, having investigated, censure one; a bad report of one's fame spreads abroad; one dies confused; and with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a state of loss (apāya), a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell (niraya). These, bhikkhus, are the five dangers in misconduct by mind. Bhikkhus, there are these five benefits (ānisaṃsa) in good conduct by mind (mano-sucarita). What five? One does not blame oneself; the wise, having investigated, praise one; a good report of one's fame spreads abroad; one dies unconfused; and with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world. These, bhikkhus, are the five benefits in good conduct by mind.
