[217] Bhikkhus, there are these five dangers (ādīnava) in what is uninspiring (apāsādika). What five? One blames even oneself; the wise, having investigated, censure one; a bad report of one's fame spreads abroad; one dies confused; and with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a state of loss (apāya), a bad destination, the lower realm, hell. These, bhikkhus, are the five dangers in what is uninspiring.
Bhikkhus, there are these five benefits (ānisaṃsa) in what is inspiring (pāsādika). What five? One does not blame even oneself; the wise, having investigated, praise one; a good report of one's fame spreads abroad; one dies unconfused; and with the breakup of the body, after death, one is reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world. These, bhikkhus, are the five benefits in what is inspiring.
