[241] Bhikkhus, there are these five dangers (ādīnava) in misconduct (duccarita). What five? One blames even oneself; the wise, having investigated, censure one; a bad report of one's fame spreads abroad; one dies confused; and with the breaking up of the body, after death, one is reborn in a state of loss (apāya), a bad destination, the lower realm, hell. These, bhikkhus, are the five dangers in misconduct.
Bhikkhus, there are these five benefits (ānisaṃsa) in good conduct (sucarita). What five? One does not blame even oneself; the wise, having investigated, praise one; a good report of one's fame spreads abroad; one dies unconfused; and with the breaking up of the body, after death, one is reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world. These, bhikkhus, are the five benefits in good conduct.
