[255] Bhikkhus, the holy life is lived for the abandonment, for the cutting off, of five kinds of stinginess (macchariya). Of which five? The holy life is lived for the abandonment, for the cutting off, of stinginess regarding dwellings (āvāsamacchariya); of stinginess regarding families (kulamacchariya) … of stinginess regarding gain (lābhamacchariya) … of stinginess regarding praise (vaṇṇamacchariya) … the holy life is lived for the abandonment, for the cutting off, of stinginess regarding the Dhamma (dhammamacchariya). Bhikkhus, it is for the abandonment, for the cutting off, of these five kinds of stinginess that the holy life is lived.
