[259] Bhikkhus, without abandoning five dhammas one is incapable of … the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna … the fruit of stream-entry … the fruit of once-returning … the fruit of non-returning … of realizing arahantship. What five? Stinginess regarding dwellings (āvāsa-macchariya), stinginess regarding families (kula-macchariya), stinginess regarding gain (lābha-macchariya), stinginess regarding praise (vaṇṇa-macchariya), and ingratitude and unthankfulness (akataññutā akataveditā). Bhikkhus, without abandoning these five dhammas one is incapable of realizing arahantship.
Bhikkhus, having abandoned five dhammas one is capable of realizing arahantship. What five? Stinginess regarding dwellings, stinginess regarding families, stinginess regarding gain, stinginess regarding praise, and ingratitude and unthankfulness.
