[277] Bhikkhus, endowed with six qualities (dhamma), a king's fine thoroughbred horse is worthy of a king, fit for a king's use, and is reckoned as a factor of kingship. With which six? Here, bhikkhus, a king's fine thoroughbred horse is patient with forms, patient with sounds, patient with odours, patient with tastes, and patient with tangibles, and it is endowed with strength. Endowed with these six factors (aṅga), bhikkhus, a king's fine thoroughbred horse is worthy of a king, fit for a king's use, and is reckoned as a factor of kingship.
Just so, bhikkhus, endowed with six qualities a bhikkhu is worthy of gifts … an unsurpassed field of merit for the world. With which six? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is patient with forms, patient with sounds, patient with odours, patient with tastes, patient with tangibles, and patient with mental phenomena (dhammā). Endowed with these six qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is worthy of gifts … an unsurpassed field of merit for the world.
