[276] 5. Bhikkhus, endowed with six factors, a king's fine thoroughbred horse (assājānīya) is worthy of a king, fit for a king's use, and is reckoned simply as a factor of the king. With what six? Here, bhikkhus, a king's fine thoroughbred horse is patient with forms, patient with sounds, patient with smells, patient with tastes, patient with tangible objects, and is endowed with beauty. Endowed with these six factors, bhikkhus, a king's fine thoroughbred horse is worthy of a king, fit for a king's use, and is reckoned simply as a factor of the king.
Just so, bhikkhus, endowed with six dhammas, a bhikkhu is worthy of gifts (āhuneyya) … an unsurpassed field of merit for the world. With what six? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is patient with forms, patient with sounds, patient with smells, patient with tastes, patient with tangible objects, and patient with dhammas. Endowed with these six dhammas, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is worthy of gifts … an unsurpassed field of merit for the world.
