[310] Bhikkhus, there are these three causes (nidāna) for the origin of kammas. What three? Greed (lobha) is a cause for the origin of kammas; hatred (dosa) is a cause for the origin of kammas; delusion (moha) is a cause for the origin of kammas. Bhikkhus, non-greed (alobha) does not arise from greed; rather, bhikkhus, from greed only greed arises. Bhikkhus, non-hatred (adosa) does not arise from hatred; rather, bhikkhus, from hatred only hatred arises. Bhikkhus, non-delusion (amoha) does not arise from delusion; rather, bhikkhus, from delusion only delusion arises. Bhikkhus, it is not through kamma born of greed, kamma born of hatred, or kamma born of delusion that devas are evident, that humans are evident, or that any other good destination (sugati) whatever is evident; rather, bhikkhus, it is through kamma born of greed, kamma born of hatred, and kamma born of delusion that hell (niraya) is evident, that the animal realm (tiracchānayoni) is evident, that the realm of hungry ghosts (pittivisaya) is evident, and that any other bad destination (duggati) whatever is evident. These, bhikkhus, are the three causes for the origin of kammas.
