[311] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Kimmilā, in the Bamboo Grove (Veḷuvana). Then the Venerable Kimmila approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Kimmila said this to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the condition, why, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna (parinibbuta), the true Dhamma (saddhamma) does not endure long?"
"Here, Kimmila, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, laymen, and laywomen dwell without reverence and without deference toward the Teacher; they dwell without reverence and without deference toward the Dhamma; they dwell without reverence and without deference toward the Saṅgha; they dwell without reverence and without deference toward the training (sikkhā); they dwell without reverence and without deference toward heedfulness (appamāda); they dwell without reverence and without deference toward hospitality (paṭisanthāra). This, Kimmila, is the cause, this is the condition, why, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the true Dhamma does not endure long."
"But what, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the condition, why, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the true Dhamma endures long?"
"Here, Kimmila, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, laymen, and laywomen dwell with reverence and with deference toward the Teacher; they dwell with reverence and with deference toward the Dhamma; they dwell with reverence and with deference toward the Saṅgha; they dwell with reverence and with deference toward the training; they dwell with reverence and with deference toward heedfulness; they dwell with reverence and with deference toward hospitality. This, Kimmila, is the cause, this is the condition, why, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the true Dhamma endures long."
