[201] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Kimilā, in the Bamboo Grove (Veḷuvana). Then the Venerable Kimbila approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down at one side. Sitting at one side, the Venerable Kimbila said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, whereby, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna (parinibbuta), the true Dhamma (saddhamma) does not last long?"
"Here, Kimbila, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, laymen, and laywomen dwell without respect and without deference toward the Teacher; they dwell without respect and without deference toward the Dhamma; they dwell without respect and without deference toward the Saṅgha; they dwell without respect and without deference toward the training (sikkhā); they dwell without respect and without deference toward one another. This, Kimbila, is the cause, this is the condition, whereby, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the true Dhamma does not last long."
"But what, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the condition, whereby, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the true Dhamma lasts long?"
"Here, Kimbila, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, laymen, and laywomen dwell with respect and with deference toward the Teacher; they dwell with respect and with deference toward the Dhamma; they dwell with respect and with deference toward the Saṅgha; they dwell with respect and with deference toward the training; they dwell with respect and with deference toward one another. This, Kimbila, is the cause, this is the condition, whereby, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the true Dhamma lasts long."
