[56] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Kimilā, in the Bamboo Grove (Veḷuvana). Then the Venerable Kimila approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Kimila said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, why, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna (parinibbuta), the true Dhamma (saddhamma) does not endure long?"
"Here, Kimila, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, laymen, and laywomen dwell without respect and without deference toward the Teacher; they dwell without respect and without deference toward the Dhamma; they dwell without respect and without deference toward the Saṅgha; they dwell without respect and without deference toward the training (sikkhā); they dwell without respect and without deference toward concentration (samādhi); they dwell without respect and without deference toward heedfulness (appamāda); they dwell without respect and without deference toward hospitality (paṭisanthāra). This, Kimila, is the cause, this is the condition, why, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the true Dhamma does not endure long."
"But what, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the condition, why, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the true Dhamma endures long?"
"Here, Kimila, when the Tathāgata has attained final Nibbāna, the bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, laymen, and laywomen dwell with respect and with deference toward the Teacher; they dwell with respect and with deference toward the Dhamma; they dwell with respect and with deference toward the Saṅgha; they dwell with respect and with deference toward the training; they dwell with respect and with deference toward concentration; they dwell with respect and with deference toward heedfulness; they dwell with respect and with deference toward hospitality.
