[341] Bhikkhus, that a bhikkhu, without concentration (samādhi) that is peaceful, without one that is sublime, without one gained through tranquilization, without one attained to unification (ekodibhāva), will wield the manifold kinds of psychic power (iddhividha) — having been one, he will become many; having been many, he will become one … he will exercise mastery with the body even as far as the Brahmā world — this is not possible. That with the divine ear element (dibbā sotadhātu), purified and surpassing the human, he will hear both kinds of sounds, the divine and the human, those that are far as well as near — this is not possible. That he will understand the minds (citta) of other beings, of other persons, having encompassed them with his own mind — a mind with lust he will understand as 'a mind with lust' … or an unliberated mind he will understand as 'an unliberated mind' — this is not possible. That he will recollect his manifold past abodes (pubbenivāsa), that is: one birth, two births … thus with their aspects and particulars he will recollect his manifold past abodes — this is not possible. That with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, he will see beings … he will understand beings as they fare on according to their kamma — this is not possible. That with the destruction of the taints (āsava) … having realized it, he will enter upon and dwell in it — this is not possible.

That with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, he will see beings passing away and reappearing — inferior and superior, beautiful and ugly, fortunate and unfortunate — he will understand beings as they fare on according to their kamma — this is possible. That with the destruction of the taints, the taintless liberation of mind (anāsavā cetovimutti) … having realized it, he will enter upon and dwell in it — this is possible.
