[344] Bhikkhus, without having abandoned six dhammas, one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna (paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ). What six? Sensual desire (kāmacchanda), ill will (byāpāda), dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha), restlessness and remorse (uddhacca-kukkucca), doubt (vicikicchā); and the danger (ādīnava) in sensual pleasures has not been clearly seen by him, as it really is (yathābhūta), with right wisdom. Bhikkhus, without having abandoned these six dhammas, one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna.
Bhikkhus, having abandoned six dhammas, one is capable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna. What six? Sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, doubt; and the danger in sensual pleasures has been clearly seen by him, as it really is, with right wisdom. Bhikkhus, having abandoned these six dhammas, one is capable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna.
