[35] Bhikkhus, there are these five benefits (ānisaṃsa) of giving (dāna). What five? He is dear and agreeable to many people; good and peaceful persons (santo sappurisā) associate with him; a fine report of his good name spreads abroad; he does not fall away from the duties of a householder (gihidhamma); and with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world. These, bhikkhus, are the five benefits of giving.
Giving, one becomes dear, following the way (dhamma) of the good;
the good, the restrained, those who live the spiritual life (brahmacārī), always associate with him.
They teach him the Dhamma that dispels all suffering (dukkha);
having understood that Dhamma here, he, free of taints (āsava), attains final Nibbāna.
