[36] Bhikkhus, there are these five timely gifts (kāladāna). Which five? One gives a gift (dāna) to a visitor; one gives a gift to one setting out on a journey; one gives a gift to one who is sick; one gives a gift in a time of famine; and whatever new grains and new fruits there are, these one presents first to those who are virtuous. These, bhikkhus, are the five timely gifts.
Those possessed of wisdom, responsive to requests, rid of stinginess,
give at the proper time;
when a gift is given at the proper time to the noble ones,
who are upright and steadfast,
the giver's mind being full of confidence,
his offering (dakkhiṇā) becomes abundant.
Those who rejoice in that gift,
or who render service there —
the offering is not thereby diminished;
they too are sharers in the merit.
Therefore one should give with an unhesitant mind (citta)
where a gift bears great fruit;
merits are the support of living beings
in the world beyond.
