[387] (Pali source: §116)¹ Bhikkhus, there are these three dhammas. What three? Restlessness (uddhacca), non-restraint (asaṃvara), and heedlessness (pamāda). These, bhikkhus, are the three dhammas. For the abandonment of these three dhammas, bhikkhus, three dhammas should be developed. What three? For the abandonment of restlessness, serenity (samatha) should be developed; for the abandonment of non-restraint, restraint (saṃvara) should be developed; for the abandonment of heedlessness, heedfulness (appamāda) should be developed. For the abandonment of these three dhammas, bhikkhus, these three dhammas should be developed.
The First Chapter of Triads (Tikavagga).
Its summary verse (uddāna):
Lust, misconduct, thought,
perception, and elements — thus it is proclaimed;²
gratification, discontent, contentment,
and two³ with restlessness — thus the chapter.
