[39] Bhikkhus, considering these five grounds, a mother and father wish for a son (putta) to be born in the family. What five? "Supported by us, he will support us in turn; or he will do work for us; the family lineage will endure long; he takes up the inheritance; or else, when we are departed and have died, he will present the offering (dakkhiṇā) on our behalf." Considering five grounds, the wise wish for a son:
"Supported by us, he will support us in turn;

the family lineage will stand long;

Therefore peaceful good persons,
grateful and thankful,
support their mother and father,
recollecting what was done for them before;
they perform duties for them,
as is due to those prior benefactors (pubbakārī).
Heeding their counsel, supporting those who nurtured him,
not letting the family lineage decline,
endowed with faith and with virtue,
such a son is worthy of praise.
