[40] Bhikkhus, depending on the Himavant, the king of mountains, the great sāla trees grow with five kinds of growth. With which five? They grow with branches, leaves, and foliage; they grow with bark; they grow with the outer flaking bark; they grow with sapwood; they grow with heartwood. Bhikkhus, depending on the Himavant, the king of mountains, the great sāla trees grow with these five kinds of growth. Just so, bhikkhus, depending on a head of family (kulapati) endowed with faith (saddhā), the people within the household grow with five kinds of growth. With which five? They grow with faith; they grow with virtue (sīla); they grow with learning (suta); they grow with generosity (cāga); they grow with wisdom (paññā). Bhikkhus, depending on a head of family endowed with faith, the people within the household grow with these five kinds of growth.
Just as, depending on a rocky mountain
in the wilderness, in the mighty forest,
the trees grow up to become lords of the forest,
even so, depending on a faithful clansman
accomplished in virtue here,
wife and children, kinsfolk,
companions, the circle of relatives,
and those who live in dependence on him, grow.
Seeing the virtue of that virtuous one,
his generosity and good deeds,
those who are discerning emulate him.
Having practiced here the Dhamma,
the path leading to heaven, to a good destination,
delighting in the deva world,
they rejoice, enjoying the pleasures they desire.

Sīha, the benefits of giving,
timely (giving), food, and faith,
sons, and the sāla trees — these are the ten.
