[63] Bhikkhus, growing by five kinds of growth, a noble disciple grows by the noble growth, and he takes hold of the essence (sāradāyī) and takes hold of what is best (varādāyī) of the body. By what five? He grows in faith (saddhā), he grows in virtue (sīla), he grows in learning (suta), he grows in generosity (cāga), he grows in wisdom (paññā). Growing by these five kinds of growth, bhikkhus, a noble disciple grows by the noble growth, and he takes hold of the essence and takes hold of what is best of the body.
One who grows in faith and in virtue,
in wisdom, and in generosity and learning — in both —
such a good person, discerning,
takes up right here the essence for himself.
