[68] Bhikkhus, before my full awakening (sambodha), while I was still an unawakened bodhisatta, I developed five things, I made much of five things. What five? I developed the basis for success (iddhipāda) possessed of concentration (samādhi) due to zeal and volitional formations of striving (padhānasaṅkhāra); I developed the basis for success possessed of concentration due to energy … concentration due to mind (citta) … concentration due to investigation and volitional formations of striving; and exertion (ussoḷhi) itself as the fifth.
Bhikkhus, because I had developed and made much of these things with exertion as the fifth, then to whatever dhamma realizable by direct knowledge (abhiññā) I inclined my mind for realization by direct knowledge, in each and every case I attained the capability of witnessing it, whenever there was a suitable basis. If I wished: 'May I wield the manifold kinds of supernormal power (iddhividha) … may I exercise mastery with the body even as far as the Brahmā world,' in each and every case I attained the capability of witnessing it, whenever there was a suitable basis. If I wished: '… may I, with the destruction of the taints (āsava), realize for myself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon it, dwell therein,' in each and every case I attained the capability of witnessing it, whenever there was a suitable basis.
