[8] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessing five qualities falls away and is not established in the true Dhamma (saddhamma). What five? A bhikkhu without faith (assaddha), bhikkhus, falls away and is not established in the true Dhamma. A bhikkhu without moral shame (ahirika), bhikkhus, falls away and is not established in the true Dhamma. A bhikkhu without moral dread (anottappī), bhikkhus, falls away and is not established in the true Dhamma. A lazy (kusīta) bhikkhu, bhikkhus, falls away and is not established in the true Dhamma. An unwise (duppañña) bhikkhu, bhikkhus, falls away and is not established in the true Dhamma. Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu falls away and is not established in the true Dhamma.
Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessing five qualities does not fall away and is established in the true Dhamma. What five? A bhikkhu with faith (saddhā), bhikkhus, does not fall away and is established in the true Dhamma. A bhikkhu with moral shame (hirimā), bhikkhus, does not fall away and is established in the true Dhamma. A bhikkhu with moral dread (ottappī), bhikkhus, does not fall away and is established in the true Dhamma. A bhikkhu of aroused energy (āraddhavīriya), bhikkhus, does not fall away and is established in the true Dhamma. Possessing these five qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu does not fall away and is established in the true Dhamma.
