[9] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities, being without respect and without deference, falls away and does not become established in the true Dhamma (saddhamma). Which five? Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu without faith (saddhā), being without respect and without deference, falls away and does not become established in the true Dhamma. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu without moral shame (hiri), being without respect and without deference, falls away and does not become established in the true Dhamma. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu without moral dread (ottappa), being without respect and without deference, falls away and does not become established in the true Dhamma. Bhikkhus, a lazy bhikkhu, being without respect and without deference, falls away and does not become established in the true Dhamma. Bhikkhus, an unwise bhikkhu, being without respect and without deference, falls away and does not become established in the true Dhamma. Bhikkhus, endowed with these five qualities, a bhikkhu, being without respect and without deference, falls away and does not become established in the true Dhamma.
Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities, being respectful and deferential, does not fall away but becomes established in the true Dhamma. Which five? Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with faith, being respectful and deferential, does not fall away but becomes established in the true Dhamma.
