[10] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities, being without respect and without deference, is incapable of achieving growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. Which five? A bhikkhu without faith (saddhā), bhikkhus, being without respect and without deference, is incapable of achieving growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. A bhikkhu without moral shame (hiri), bhikkhus … A bhikkhu without moral dread (ottappa), bhikkhus … A lazy bhikkhu, bhikkhus … A bhikkhu devoid of wisdom, bhikkhus, being without respect and without deference, is incapable of achieving growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. Possessed of these five qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, being without respect and without deference, is incapable of achieving growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities, having respect and deference, is capable of achieving growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. Which five? A bhikkhu with faith, bhikkhus, having respect and deference, is capable of achieving growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. A bhikkhu with moral shame, bhikkhus … A bhikkhu with moral dread, bhikkhus … A bhikkhu with energy (vīriya) aroused, bhikkhus … A wise bhikkhu, bhikkhus, having respect and deference, is capable of achieving growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. Possessed of these five qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, having respect and deference, is capable of achieving growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline.
